Apple Has Big Plans For It's Next Generation Of Location Services In iOS (AAPL)

Apple is looking to beef up its location services in iOS, according to a job posting discovered by Apple Insider.

Here's an excerpt from the job's description:

You will join a dynamic team responsible for qualifying the latest iOS products, working on exciting new features for iOS location services.

iOS has mostly relied on third-party apps to provide location services. A notable exception is Apple's new Reminder app that can push you event reminders based on location. That app will be included in iOS 5.

Piece of crust stolen from Texas found in Antarctica

You’ve likely heard of Pangaea (not the one that sounds similar from Avatar), but you may not realize that it wasn’t the first supercontinent; several have been identified from the rock record. About a billion years ago, a supercontinent named Rodinia formed from the collision of a number of cratons which comprise parts of today’s continents. Evidence of the collisions that built Rodinia remains in a geological remnant called the Grenville mountain range.

Collisions of continents compress the crust between them, driving up a range of mountain peaks. We see a process like this going on today in the Himalayas, where the Indian plate is pushing northward into the Eurasian plate. With time, however, erosion will level out these mountains.

The Appalachian mountain range no longer reaches the impressive heights it once did because it has been eroding for over 400 million years. Deep in the roots of the Appalachians, though, we can see evidence of an even older mountain range that has long-since eroded from sight. The remnants of the Grenville range extend along the East Coast of the United States, but also continuing north into Canada as well as south through Texas and into Mexico.

?Respect Explorer?s Heritage?

When photos started circulating yesterday of the new interface for Windows Explorer in Windows 8, I was sure they were a joke. Surely, this was an Onion mock-up. Or maybe they were from some Apple fan making fun of Microsoft's design aesthetic in which more is quite often... more. I mean, there's no way that this is something Microsoft could actually release ? let alone in 2012, right? Wrong. As Windows chief Steven Sinofsky and Windows management team member Alex Simons detail in length on the Building Windows 8 blog, these screenshots are very real. And not only that, the entire Windows team has clearly done exhaustive research and put extensive time into this feature. That's exactly why they're crowing on their blog. The entire post screams: "look how much homework we did!"

Windows 8 Can Mount ISO Images, Open VHD Files in Explorer

Windows 7 already allows mounting of Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) files through the Disk Management applet of the Computer Management tool. On Windows 8, this will be much simpler. Users will be able to mount and open VHD files directly from Windows Explorer. Additionally, Windows 8 will natively support optical disk ISO image files, allowing users to mount them as virtual optical drives and access contains within it through Windows 8 Explorer.

To mount an ISO file, click on the ?mount? action from the Explorer ribbon (or just double-click or right-click on the file), and Windows seamlessly creates a ?virtual? CDROM or DVD drive. A new drive letter appears indicating that the contents are now readily accessible. The contents of the ISO are accessible just as they would have been had you inserted the CD/DVD media into a physical optical drive.

Once you are done using the ISO, you can (virtually) ?eject? it, and the virtual drive disappears.

VHD files in Windows 8 can be mounted the same way, but rather than appearing as a removable drive (as is the case with ISO), VHDs appear as new hard drives.

You can work with the virtual hard disk just like any other file storage in your system, whether you are modifying, adding or removing files. Once you?ve finished working with the VHD, like an ISO, you can right-click it and click Eject (or just use the Eject button on the ribbon). Any changes you?ve made remain saved within the file.
